Our Approach

We research the sire and dam’s lineage, looking for horses who excelled in distances and racing styles relevant to our goals. We also consider yearlings from promising sires and dams whose offspring haven’t yet had a chance to prove themselves on the track. This can be an opportunity to acquire a talented thoroughbred at a more competitive price.

Yearlings & Weanlings

At Edge, we’re constantly on the lookout with our Bloodstock Advisor, Neil Jenkinson FBAA for promising young horses to add to our stable. Beyond pedigree and proven bloodlines, we also look out for:

  • Balance and Proportion: A well-proportioned horse with a strong topline, deep chest, and powerful hindquarters – focussing on efficient movement and explosive speed.
  • Correct Legs and Feet: Strong, straight legs and healthy hooves are essential for a horse’s long-term soundness and ability to withstand the rigors of training and racing.
  • Movement: whilst young horses continue developing, we are always looking for smooth, balanced strides and a willingness to engage the hindquarters. Do they look like an athlete?
  • Intelligence and Trainability: A yearling displaying intelligence, curiosity, and a willingness to learn is highly desirable. These qualities make them easier to train and establish a strong bond with their handlers.

Before any purchase, a thorough vet examination is crucial to assess the yearlings’ overall health and identify any potential health concerns, and if purchasing from a yearling sale, we research the seller’s reputation and the history of horses they’ve previously offered.

Tried Horses

When we look to acquire a Tried Horse, (those that have already raced), we are looking for a diamond in the rough, a horse that meets our rigid requirements but may have not had everything going for it at the time – whether that be fitness, maturity, conditions or other.

We will acquire these horses with a plan to reset them in a fresh environment, with a high-quality trainer and a focus on fitness. We will tailor individual programs and strategies for every horse, thus maximising opportunities for on track success at both metropolitan and regional levels.

Finally, at the conclusion of our fillies and mares racing careers, our focus on thoroughbreds with A rated nicks or better will present opportunities for future breeding potential.

Broodmares

We have a number of broodmares located at Figtrees Farm (around 45 minutes to the Gold Coast and under an hour to Brisbane) and at Sledmere Stud in the Hunter Valley (around 2 hours to Newcastle).

Our Broodmares all have A rated nicks with exceptional pedigree and on track performance.  We can’t wait to introduce you to our first Edge foals in 2024, each with impeccable bloodlines.
